The third and fourth grades are the times when children begin making the transition that will lead them to be independent students. Instead of learning how to read, they are now reading to learn; instead of learning how to write, they are now beginning to write so that others can learn from them. Students in these grades are solidifying their basic mathematical skills and enhancing their understanding of mathematics as a way to bring structure and order to life. The students are encouraged to examine the world around them as they expand their knowledge of literature, science, and social studies. In these grades there is an increasing emphasis on self-sufficiency as the students learn strategies that they can apply both to their current and future academic endeavors.
